CELLARHEAD: Dog owners are being urged to take extra care with their pets during the hot weather. Cellarhead-based charity Animal Lifeline has appealed for dogs not to be left in hot places such as cars and conservatories during the heatwave.

Spokesman Nick Fletcher said: "Many people do not realise how fast the temperature can rise in a car, even with a window slightly open. Dogs can die within minutes."

He added: "It is important pet owners avoid leaving dogs in cars even for a short time."

"Even a dog left in a garden can suffer from the heat if it has no access to shade and water."

Yesterday, The Sentinel reported how canine visitors to Doggie Fashion, at Trentham Gardens, were lapping up special ice creams to keep them cool.

FENTON: Gary Stephen Betts, aged 31, of King Street, Fenton, was remanded in custody by North Staffordshire magistrates to July 7, accused of possessing five subutex tablets, a Class C drug, on July 1 this year.

KINGSLEY: Country gardens will be on display at Sunday's Kingsley Village open garden event. Five gardens in the village will be open to the public and there will be stalls, refreshments, raffles and a treasure hunt. Admission is £3 for adults and £1 for an accompanied child, with all proceeds going to Kingsley Village Hall. Gardens will be open between 2pm and 5pm and entrance is by programme.

BIDDULPH: Biddulph Town Hall will host a hoedown tonight from 7pm to 10pm. The event includes a pie and pea supper and guests are asked to bring their drinks.
