No-one does it quite like we do
HOW relevant the words of playwright Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus are today, when, more than 300 years ago, he described Queen Helen of Troy as 'the face that launched a thousand ships'.
Those words could equally have been used for our own Queen when describing the great floatilla down the River Thames last weekend.

PARTY TIME: The Queen inspired many great festivities.
Nothing has been seen on such a grand scale since the sights shown in the Canaletto paintings from 300 years ago.
Last weekend, though, it was boats of peace and love, rather than ships of warfare.

Pity though the British weather played up as usual, but at least it did not halt the occasion. That said, it probably brought on the illness that hospitalised the Duke of Edinburgh.
However, even that didn't stop anything. As they said the show must go on.
If a medal for endurance was cast, then all the royal family should have got one for standing all those hours in the cold and wet, especially the Queen and the Duke at their ages.
A good concert outside Buckingham Palace followed two days later, although probably enjoyed more by the younger royals than the Queen, ending with a great, rousing speech by Prince Charles.
The more formal occasion on the last day was held at St Paul's Cathedral, followed by lunches with invited guests from all over the country and commonwealth.
Whether you are a royalist or democrat, you cannot disagree with the fact that no one in the world can do spectacular pomp and ceremonial parades like this country.
Even just looking on as a spectator, great theatrical parades like this, televised all over the world, just make you feel proud to be British.
