“had the same problem myself with a cat that had been straying for a few weeks and was thin and matted , rang about 5/6 differant places ,ithere they were full , gave me another number to ring, answering machine , or no answer at all , after a few days of keeping her and asking around , we found the owner ourselves , it also happened to a friend who found a dog ,no-one would take it in, they call them selves caring , it makes me angry , if we cant turn to them to help a animal thats in need , then who can we turn to and who can the animals depend on , othere people have said theve had the same problem.”

“We had a similiar thing with cows over Christmas and New year. All over the Smallthorne, Norton, Ball Green, Chell Heath and Chatterley area they were. No prizes for guessing who they 'belong' to but when my fella called he got the same answer. Someone elses problem. Eventually, two fellas sorted it with a bit of lateral thinking but the green at ballers is a mess.
I've captured and detained without legal representation the odd dog or cat but I'll be ******ed if I'm going to detain a bloody bull!!!
Hope the dog has found a good home.”

“We had a similar problem in Leek a few years back when Stoke were deputising for the dog wardens. We found a dog and returned it to its home - the owners were out and no where safe to leave the dog. Rang the dog warden and he said that as we had taken the dog back to its home and then taken it away again we had in fact stolen it!!!! We were told to release the dog..again unsafe to do so. Couldn't believe what I was hearing and rang SMDC to complain. The dog warden eventually came to pick up the dog with his tail between his legs...the warden not the dog..the dog was a happy chappy :)”

“As far as people complaining when shelters say they are full. Maybe they are actually just full? They can't just take an infinate number of animals you know? Dogs/cats don't just get rehomed overnight. They could be in for weeks/months or maybe get put down for not being rehomed after a certain ammount of time.
Don't blame the shelters for doing the best they can on charity funds. Blame the idiot owners who give them up, dump them or just don't bother to reclaim their pets.”
“About four weeks ago there was a young dog loose running around Victoria Road during rush hour traffic. The kind and responsible thing 2 do was to capture the dog and detain it until the city dog warden or the owner could collect the dog.
We caught the dog and asked about the neighbourhood, we then called the dog warden. We were told it was a bit late (16.45 on a Friday) and the warden finished at 5 so could we leave it until Monday. We agree as long as our own dog was ok. Our dog didn’t get on with the new dog and the new dog howled continuously for the next 3 hours. I phoned the council who told me they didn’t offer an out of hours service so i would need to keep the dog until the Monday. I then phoned the RSPCA who told me that buy law from April 2011 the council must give am out of hour’s service so phone them back. I phoned the council out of hour’s service once again and told the man on the phone what i had been told. He said he wasn’t aware of any law. I said the neighbours are complaining. His response was then astonishing, he told me to let the dog go. I explained about the risk to motorists and to the dog to which he responded “that’s the risk you take”. I phoned the police to see if they would take the dog only to be told they didn’t do that anymore as the law had changed and the council must give an out of hours service. We kept the dog until the city dogs home opened. I must apologise to my neighbours about the howling and I’m truly sorry and thank you for understanding. But it wasn’t my fault if only the council understood the law and have the out of hours service they are meant to.”
