“Fred what correctly stripped of his Knighthood in my opinion. As a former RBS group employee, a private shareholder and tax payer I voted against the ABN takeover. I could plainly see as a former lowly CA that this deal was WRONG for the bank, we were selling the family silver to undertake it and I could even see the dark clouds forming re the overheating of everything on credit. He wanted this deal to boost his ego in the city like the NatWest takeover did in my opinion. His pension should have been fully withdrawn and he forced to retire on a state pension only. His actions have caused major financial distress to many. Well done Mr. Goodwin!”

“why yes, yes it is. For all the reasons that M3SSN-UK states (coincidentally I am looking right at the ABN-Amro complex in Amsterdam right at the moment, it's less than 1/4 mile away from where I'm sitting) and for all the reasons that the now-Mr Goodwin has lined up for himself. However, is he any less guilty than Sir Tom McKillop the then-chairman, or any of the rest of the board, or the executives of Northern Rock or Lloyds who also went wild with other peoples' money? I've heard it argued today that Alan Greenspan, the US Federal Reserve's former boss, could easily be considered just as if not more culpable, as his monetary policies did far more damage to the global economy than anything Fred could have done.

Fred the Shred deserves everything that's coming to him, but many others also are to blame and I suspect that Fred's de-knighting may just be a cheap act of scapegoating, let him take the flak and the others might just get away with it. Let's not forget who the government works for and represents - big banks, because we are a plutocracy.”

“I think it is wrong for the government to be tinkering around with the honours system. Unlike Mugabe, Fred Goodwin isn't a convicted criminal. Even if you think this is a punishment, then how do you hurt those bankers who didn't become a 'Sir'?”

“The country is in trouble because the banks are in trouble, the country will only recover when the banks recover. Should we help or hinder the banks to recover?.”

“Well Bob, you do raise a fair point; the Shred hasn't been convicted of anything (yet) and wasn't even seriously admonished by the FSA, yet Lord Archcreep wasn't stripped of his peerage following his perjury trial, nor were those Liebore peers who got gaoled recently for diddling their expenses dishonoured either. The remit of the Honours Forfeiture Committe is to act only when an individual "has been found guilty by the courts of a criminal offence, or has been censured or struck off by the relevant regulatory authority or professional body for actions or failures to act which are directly relevant to the granting of the honour"

And indeed as you say, many of those involved didn't have any honours and remain in their jobs.

    But Fred does deserve it.”

“How on earth has the Labour Party got the nerve to criticise anybody on this issue? The Labour Party's Shadow Prime Minister Ed miliband's brother David Miliband has just earned £500,000 in a short period of time. Probably sometime in the future Ed Miliband will join Tony Blair and earn several million pounds from 'advisory roles', pro war speeches and book sales!

“I didnt like what Fred Goodwin did to backrupt RPS, but this sets a dangerous precedent. You only lost your knighthood if you were convicted and jailed, not because the goverment "didn't like you". This will bring the already questionable honours system in just more disreput.”

“Steve Batkin, one could extend that argument and ask how on earth Liebore have the nerve to criticise anyone on anything, given what they inflicted on us for thirteen years, especially the disaster that was Gormless McDoom.”
