“I'm a bit mixed - the new design is brighter and I like the fact you can add your own stories and pictures. But it's a bit confusing, particularly if you've been used to a list of stories on the homepage.”

“I wrote a review of my thoughts of the new site here http://tinyurl.com/3p2ucrb

My worst gripe is that a) the content I'm after is all over the place, no matter how hard it tries, I'll only really be interested in news and sport until I want a service. b) looks terrible on a smart phone, you have to drag not only left and right, but up, down, diagonal, there's uniformity to it.”

“I have to agree with the majority , it's too busy, it's just seems a mixture of giant text & floating stories.....looks just like it's been pulled out the supplements pages, advertisements are randomly placed all over the page.

I would have benchmarked off one of the big companies. BBC- clear, cool colours(not sunglasses cool ), sky- looks a very standard page with a snazzy background.

    Sometimes less is more....”

It seems like a lot of people aren't too into the social-media style but I'd agree that the homepage could do with being a bit more news-heavy as that's what people come to this site expecting.

I like that someone re-registered just to post a comment that they're not using the site. The lengths people go to to moan!”

Following up on my first point --- I couldn't even find previous articles through the search, in order to bring it up had to use the old URL. Very disappointing it has turned into more of a market place and social review than local news and issues. Thumbs down.”

It'll get rid of the idiots as they won't work out how to join up, ya' know, like Roy in Burslem and that fool who comes on as Gary from the pig pen. Anyone now commenting will want to,will make a valid point and we will get debate, not insults. I'll agree with the other comments that the front page needs work. It needs to get into the headlines more, show what's on offer for comment. The colours hit you to hard, its a bit child like, needs to be less bright, more pastel used. You are after a mixed bunch of comments, so try and be all things to all men. You know you'll get the knockers mate, its the internet and you'll have the internet morons at you as soon as you try anything new. Anyway good luck, I think it will work, ignore the no change fools, its how the internet gets better .”

“I have always thought the the Homepage should say what the site is a bout and then guide users to other areas. I don't feel that this is very 'user-friendly' at all. Sorry but this design is not an improvement.
Website designers should keep in mind who the site is to be used by, and unfortunately I think this one has been designed my someone who has not sent it out to a 'market' first to find out how user-friendly it is.
Primary colours are not very user-friendly to those who are visually impaired.
And there is a box that keeps appearing whilst you are typing which gets in the way. I don't the box to keep appearing, it is very very annoying.
All the dialogue/site being in the centre column of the screen is very off putting too......
I think it needs another look at........ don't you?”

You should be taking a leaf from some of the Nationals and following suit - easy to navigate, headlines bold and prominent, etc - this is a bit amateurish and casual for a news publication. I'm a web whizz and have found it difficult to work out what's going on. I was only commenting to colleagues yesterday that the Sentinel site looks good as we were considering advertising space for a client. I've completely changed my mind now. It's Wordpress/blog style gone overboard. Someone got a bit carried away I think. Did you not have a focus group for this?”

“I appreciate that most site re-designs have people spitting feathers until they get used to them... but this looks like a cheap and nasty blog template.

The 3 columns layout means everything is too squashed. My biggest complaint is that clearly defined sections ('News', 'Sport', etc.) have been sacrificed to a seemingly random jumble. The colour-coding is a miserable substitute.

The decision not to publish letters online is a massive missed opportunity. They should all go up, be categorised/tagged & archived indefinitely as a public resource. This is what digital is all about. It costs next to nothing to do this but the information therein would inform our past and future.

"Tell Us About Your Area" would work far better and gain much more usage as a fixed bar along the bottom of the page, as there is a mental link between having reached the end of existing content and wanting to produce something of one's own to share. Having it wedged in halfway down the right is just daft, as are the partner links etc on the left hand side.

I also expect more from the main "Headlines" section. It should be larger, contain the first paragraph or a snippet of the story and the extraneous details (date, byline, comments #, recommendations) should be removed or shrunk. There is too much white space wasting the opportunity to make me want to read the actual story.

These issues aside, I love BIG "I'm looking for..." bar, and the "Today in Staffordshire" bar (although this would work better as an animated drop-down.)”

“Apart from the homepage, which is a total disaster I think the site is a vast improvement on the previous one. Much easier on the eye and easier to find stuff. Plus it runs faster.
There's a problem with the navigation of the news listing pages - if you go to an article from, say, page 6 of the news listings and then use your browser's back button to return to the listing you end up back on page 1 - that's a bit rubbish.
I don't like the animated banner at the top of the homepage, any flickering flashing ads are a pain in the backside and I'd never go to a site using one to adevertise. However, it's easy to make it disappear if you use Opera (right-click then Block Content). You can probably do that somehow with FireFox as well, but you may just have to put up with them in IE.

I'd have given the old site a 3.5 out of 10 - this one gets an 8.”

“I used the old site daily and regularly posted comments etc. I have to say, the new site is dire. Its impossible to find anything, the layout is terrible, colour scheme is awful. The whole thing is disorgansied and OTT. Ive also noticed that if you read a news article for example and you have scrolled through 5 pages, when you access the article and then press 'back' it reverts to the homepage instead of the previous page. This means you then have to go back to the main site and start all over again!

I use several websites on a daily basis and I have to say that this is the worst one I have come across. I know its early days but I doubt I will be using it again. I dont really see what was wrong with the old site. At least it was user friendly and easy to navigate!

“I'm an ex-pat and stay in touch by reading the Sentinel. The new look reminds me of my first web site design about 15 years ago when I had no idea what I was doing. The choice of colours adds nothing to ease of navigation, adverts are all over my screen etc, a few minutes ago the entire page of my 1600x900 pixel screen was covered in ads. Too much clicking needed to get the latest news.
You need to go back to the drawing board and start over. Begin by identifying your target reader and the experience you want them to have. Forcing readers to scroll past ads etc to get to their preferred stories does not make the experience enjoyable and causes web visitors to look for alternate sources. Look at how subtle the ads are on Google/ Facebook if you really want to follow the social media model and if not go back to the BBC/ Daily Telegraph/ Guardian model. You can't take the social media model, plaster ads all over it and call it a good design. I hope you got a good deal from the designer - because you didn't get value for money.
Perhaps I'm not in your target audience and maybe your web analytics are giving you a different story, somehow I suspect not.”

“AH, it works, I have several 'gripes' with the new site, firstly, I can no longer post using my PS3, no big deal to some, but inconvenient to me, also, the adverts look like news items and vice versa, (probably deliberate in order to keep the alcohol pushers happy) I notice that we are allowed to "recommend" with a thumbs UP, but no facility to disapprove with a thumbs DOWN,...not very balanced is it?
you have decided to drop the letters section, a very popular section,...why is this?
is the site now easier or harder to navigate?...be honest,
some of us ex Stokies, who live in other parts of the country or the world, use/d this site in order to keep in touch with what is going on 'back home'...obviously it is difficult for us to buy the newspaper, and therefore WE don't matter,
NOPE, the whole thing is a mess, I have nothing against change, if it improves on what went before, this new site doesn't improve on the old one, it's ****** awful, and reading the comments here it would seem that the majority or the 'regulars' share my opinion, scrap it, go back to the old one, and have a rethink”

“What do I think about the new site? Not a lot. So nostalgia is to be included into 'Lifestyle'. Great! Unfortunately when friends in Canada look for 3 articles I have written concerning our families they can only find one!. I haven't got a clue how to help them. So the verdict of some Canadian ex-pats is the new site is not very good!”

“Elksie, I & others join the discussion about the new site but you or your team do not answer direct questions. It's nice for you if someone says "I like the site", not so pleasant if someone says it's rubbish. But, do you read the comments or just give them a fleeting glance? Is there someone in your team who can reply personally to direct questions similar to my query above. You have the email address. Just wasted another hour searching lifestyle.”

“Ive been trying to familiarise myself with the site again today and must say I am still struggling. When I click on 'news', I expect it to be just that - not articles or opinions written by website users about random topics - i.e. I have just clicked on news and the following pages have come up on the main page: 'How come anglers get credit', 'Sold as seen', 'It's all back to front', 'Maggie Anne the magistrate'. So, on a front page of articles which should be news, we have 4 articles of no relevance that should be elsewhere! Like 1Lindsay2 I would also like to know why no-one from the website is responding to comments? There really is no point asking for feedback if you're going to ignore it!”

“The ethos and practice of use of this site as become the epitome of daily life in Stoke, drudge on, fail, drudge on, fail, ad infinitum. Please access to letters, ability to clone identity without re-establishing the whole persona, change the blo**y colour scheme for gods sake. And last but not least sort out the fact that 2000 cans of lager is not a news item, so why oh why are the adverts posted as such. Oh one more thing theunmissable balance between the thumbs up and lack of a thumbs down means honestly the silent majority carries the dislike every time. Summing up up you dont have teething troubles, your jaws broke..........”

I think Elksie is keeping his head down in the false belief that people will have to get used to this rubbish site, rather than be honest and admit the design has it's problems. It's only a online newpaper afterall, not ceiling of the Sistine chapel in Rome. I think a compromise of the old and new site is quite possible to make everybody happy.”

“My problems with the site are as follows:

If I read a news story on page 3 of the news section, when I have finished reading it and click my 'back' button the site returns me to Page 1. Not the Page 3 I was originally on.

News Articles appear to be ordered by comments? Several times I have visited to read the news only to see an article that is days old heading the site because its received a comment. Whilst I agree that most commented stories are generally those raising the most interest this should be filtered down daily so the reader is not constantly reading days old articles.”

“What do I think of the new look? Well I appreciate this design was not of your own doing but rather forced upon the entire This Is.... network by your Daily Mail owners, but it feels more like an Advertspaper than a Newspaper really doesn't it? The "Do you own a local business?" right after registration made me concerned that I'd signed up for something that's going to spam me. Oh and ten character passwords are far too weak for any social orientated website that wants us to believe it wasn't built according to some 1996 web design ethos. Telling people to email you their thoughts? Also very 1996. Your new CMS has built in community discussion functionality. Use it to engage your readers directly at every opportunity... unless you would rather foster distrust among your userbase.”

“Something else I've noticed is that you still have the capacity and latency issues which occasionally prevent messages being submitted. Infuriatingly, once you hit 'Submit', the entire page is disabled and an Ajax dialog appears which NEVER times out. So if a connectivity or capacity problem prevents the message from being submitted, all the end user can do is refresh the page and lose their message.

If that dialog at least timed out after (let's say) 60 seconds, the end user could at least try to submit their message again, or copy it into notepad or something so they can try again later. The short-sighted scripting implementation right now results in end-users losing entire messages with no means of recovery.”

“Awful, awful website. I spend a lot of time on the internet because of my job and I would consider myself to be experienced when it comes to using websites and finding information. However this is one of the worst websites that I have ever used! The home page is just a confused mix of news, entertainment, restaurant reviews, sport, adverts and loads of other useless information that I don't need. When I come on to quickly read the news I don't need to know that Bob and his wife had a nice steak last night but the Spotted Dick was a bit dry. When I want to find out about restaurants I will click on the link at the top of the page and look at restaurants. The idea behind it is okay, that when somebody new comments on or reviews something it jumps to the top of the page, but do it on the individual page for each category. You are trying to mimick a social networking site, but it will not work with that much information. Try again.”

"Want To see THE CRYSTAL/TIFFANY,S back !
I have seen and heard so many talking about the old place, with so much passion i thought yes .So i have spoken to the owners and after much talking they are willing to listen to my proposals.
To have it tastefully done up on the out side , to have venues .. classy venues,, for example Big Bands , Soul and Motown, Disco, Live Entertainment, Comedy Store ,and more ..aimed at the over 30's... it would be an evening for "something special" We have had a meeting with the local residents with no opposition whats so ever .. in fact the ones who attended the meeting were as thrilled as i am ... but i do need to show to the owners that it could work ..bring to Newcastle a much needed venue, plus creating jobs...i have a web page where you can sign the proposal which is http://tinyurl.com/b6oxdja -venue ,or email me at newtru@hotmail.co.uk.. also in the next few weeks when the weather is kind i will be in Newcastle collecting signatures ... I need your support ,WE need a venue ."”
