“I have to agree with you, I spend a lot of time in Canada and am impressed with the loyalty of all Canadians whether they have been born there or have chosen Canada as their home. I believe that it is one reason why the children and young people are also so much more respectful to their elders and each other. We have lost so many traditions over the past 50 years or had them so diluted that we have lost that sense of loyalty and belonging. I hope after the hype of the Jubilee year has passed that we continue to have pride in our country and traditions.”

“I am from Staffordshire but currently living in Canada. I totally agree with you on this subject. The loyalty that the people have for their country is amazing. When I go to my son's assembly and everyone stands and sings the National Anthem I get a lump in my throat. It is such a shame that the UK cannot show their pride without fear of offending immigrants who have decided to call the UK their home. I am an immigrant to Canada, but totally respect their rules and way of life. Yes lets hope that after the jubilee which in my opinion the UK did a grand job, our people will not be ashamed to keep our traditions. Watching and listening to people over here talk of the jubilee made me feel proud to be a Brit.”

“I think all school children singing the national Anthem at the start of every day is a great idea - but that would mean having an assembly (which they don't seem to have every day). I would also prefer that we had a decent national anthem instead of the present dirge, but you can't have everything.....”

“The Uk national anthem is a dirge which praises one person who just happens to be in a job through accident of birth. If we had an anthem which celebrated the people of this country, the achievements of those people and the beauty of this country then I would stand up and sing it. As it stands I refuse to do so because I will not laud anyone as being better than the rest of us because of who they are. And no, before anyone asks, I would not sing any anthem dedicated to a politician either. As for kids having to sing an anthem it means nothing. Firstly having to do something does not mean someone agrees with it. Things have to come from free will in a free country or it is worthless and simply a gesture. Secondly, the singing of an anthem is not what make anyone patriotic, loyal or better behaved. The attitude of the adult population is what brings about good behaviour not singing a silly song. An example -- I have witnessed many times during football tournaments and the current running round in circles fiasco, vans and cars with Union Jacks and St Georges flags attached. I even saw one with stickers proclaiming that "England is number one" or some such rot. Whatever, the occupants probably consider themselves to be fine upstanding patriotic folk who love their country. The thing which makes me smile is how often rubbish is jettisoned out of these vehicles as they drive along. Surely it would mean more if people stopped messing up their own land and had some pride in themselves and instilling in their offspring the idea of right and wrong to encourage good behaviour before worrying about singing anthems at assemblies. Oh! and as for being encouraged to leave if one doesn't want to sing an anthem, I think we live in a free country and that means being able to do or not do as one pleases so long as it's legal...of course if you don't want free speech there's always North Korea, they all sing anthems every day there and adore their leader with pride!”

“Personally, I would go for "God Save The Queen" as the national anthem but then again I was always a big Sex Pistols fan: -
God save the queen
The fascist regime
They made you a moron
Potential H-bomb
God save the queen
She ain't no human being
There is no future
In England's dreaming
Don't be told what you want
Don't be told what you need
There's no future, no future,
No future for you
God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves
God save the queen
'Cause tourists are money
And our figurehead
Is not what she seems
Oh God save history
God save your mad parade
Oh Lord God have mercy
All crimes are paid
When there's no future
How can there be sin
We're the flowers in the dustbin
We're the poison in your human machine
We're the future, your future
God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves
God save the queen
We mean it man
And there is no future
In England's dreaming
No future, no future,
No future for you
No future, no future,
No future for me
No future, no future,
No future for you
No future, no future
For you”
“In Canada, all school children (no matter what colour or religion) have to stand for the National Anthem on the tannoy before classes begin each day. Do you think that should happen in UK Schools? Would that be acceptable to everyone living in Britain, to stand up for God Save the Queen? It is not a religious message although she is head of the Church of England. It should be a sign of pride in the country in which the person lives, yes?”
