See a different side of Tenerife
Advertorial Feature
With temperatures that rarely dip below 20°C at even the coldest points of the year, Tenerife is a great destination for young groups and families to visit in any season. Indeed, the ‘Land of the Eternal Spring’, with its diverse range of attractions and holiday opportunities, is perfect for a summer holiday or winter getaway.
The main touristy areas of Tenerife reside towards its southern end in the crowded beach areas of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. As such, to get away from the majority of sun-worshippers that flock to the island, it’s advisable to head up to the north coast where, alongside the capital Santa Cruz, a number of quieter, more quintessentially-Spanish towns can be found, such as Garachico.

Anyone hunting for beaches won’t find them in Garachico, but that’s part of the charm of this relaxed colonial town, which clings to a volcanic coastline littered with natural rock swimming pools and traversed by crazy-paving public footpaths. Despite a huge volcanic eruption that devastated much of the town in 1706, centuries-old architecture still exists, including the Castillo San Miguel, a fort initially built to defend against pirates and which is now home to historical exhibits telling the story of the area.
From there it’s worth heading to the main plaza of La Libertad to visit other historical points of interest, including the 16th century Convent of San Francisco, which is worth a spare moment of your time to look around.
The town itself is a joy to explore. In amongst the beautiful, white stone buildings that line every cobbled street, you’ll find a number of great little shops selling a variety of local crafts, art and ceramics.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, La Tasquita de Eduardo is a fantastic spot to dine at if you’re looking for some truly authentic Canarian cuisine. Favourites include the grilled entrecote, Iberico pork and an inventive avocado salad like few you’ll have experienced before.
For a great meal with an equally great view of the coastline, Restaurante Ardeola gets a nod thanks to a varied menu and affordable pricing compared to some of its seafront competitors. Vegetarians and meat-lovers alike are catered for, as are those on the lookout for fresh seafood, with a catch of the day a staple favourite.
Tenerife holidays are always packed with sun, sea and adventure, and Garachico is just one area of the island that’s well worth a visit. Be sure to find a superb deal to this sunshine getaway by booking your 2013 holiday with Monarch, and take a real look around to see what other treasures the island might have in store for you.
