How did council come up with exorbitant taxi prices?
IT'S NOT FARE: I AM so angry that I need to write to The Sentinel. I am a pensioner and have just spent a few days with my daughter in Milton Keynes. The train fare was £16 each way for a one hour train journey.
I got off the train at 22.28pm and took a taxi home from the station, approximately two miles. I was then faced with a charge of £9 for a five minute journey.
When I queried this price I was told that this was set by Stoke-on-Trent City Council. Are they all millionaires, I ask myself, for them to be able to pay this.
I certainly struggle to pay this on a pension. How did the council come up with such exorbitant prices?

“£9 for 2 miles,
£4.50 a mile, What will it be next year £5 a mile?
The council need to look at what a PENSIONER GETS A WEEK, before they set these charges and if URSULA WILLOCK is reading this i feel so sorry for you that you were ROBBED.”

“Mrs Willock.
If you used a Hackney Carriage (Taxi) from Stoke station, the driver would have been using a preset meter.
This clocks up the MAXIMUM he can charge you.
As you used the vehicle after 22:00hrs (10pm), the meter would be on its highest setting, however, I say again, this is the MAXIMUM he can charge you.
The driver can charge less if he wants, but the fares set by the Council goes up usually annually, to cover the high costs of both fuel and the vehicle.
If you used a pre-booked Private Hire company car, the driver can charge you what ever he wants (within reason), unless you agree a price BEFORE you get in the car.
Either way, if you feel you have been over charged, please ring the Licensing section at Hanley Town Hall, (or call in the next time you are in Hanley), on tel - 232674.
Our fair proffessional drivers in Stoke, don't wish to lose their livlihoods, because of a few greedy people. They want you to report them.”
