No democracy in council action
AS A young man I was imbued with an unwavering pride in the belief that I was born into and belonged to a nation that cherished and prospered from a true democracy.
Many different governments since then have partially eroded that vision. Yet I staunchly clung on to that belief.
Enter Mr Pervez and his gang. There is now no vestige of democracy left in our city.
Over recent months the pages of this newspaper have stood testimony to the undoubted fact that the vast majority of the people do not want a new civic centre.

Yet this is what we will get against the wishes of the people. Mr Pervez will set his party whips to force our councillors to vote for the new centre against the wishes of the people.
Only in a dictatorship would this occur, or so I thought.
Letters to this newspaper, comments on Radio Stoke, marches and protests all stand for nothing when stacked against the wishes of Mr Pervez and his cronies.
If you, like me, are sick to the back teeth of councillors who ignore their responsibility to represent the people of their ward, then this is what to do:
At the next election make sure that you vote;
Do not vote for the person who is currently your councillor;
Do not vote Labour or Conservative because they both operate party whips and those councillors therefore do as they are ordered by their leader and so ignore your wishes and needs.
Mr Pervez and his party have shown what a fragile thing democracy is, so follow these three steps and help get rid of this dictatorship.
ALAN ALCOCK

“Unfortunately by the time the next election comes around the new civic offices will have been built and we will be saddled with the debt, regardless of who gets elected.”

“Alan Alcock, while I agree with nearly all you say I cannot agree with you when you say at the next election don't vote for the person who is currently your councillor. One of my councillors for Northwood and Birches Head ward where I live is Paul Breeze. He is a fantastic independent ward councillor and chairman of Hanley One Residents Association for donkey's years and has been truly magnificent in supporting the people against this move from Stoke to Hanley and constantly fighting this Labour load of undemocratic hypocrites. So don't judge ALL current councillors with Labour.
Jeff Healey, Hanley.”
