The Sentinel

LANCE Corporal Bill Coltman asked to become a stretcher-bearer, making him a non-combatant, who would still face the dangers of war.

He was lightly built at only 5ft 4ins, but carried many wounded men to safety on his back, more than once.

He won his medals through his unwillingness to give up until all the wounded were recovered from the battlefield.

He was a quiet man, and it is said that after receiving his VC, he made a detour to avoid a civic reception in his honour.

With the stories we are reading daily about heroes of the Staffords how dare they try to erase the regiment's name? They must not succeed.

Stories like this should be pushed through the door of Number 10, and the Prime Minister should be made to read them.

We must not forget the role The Sentinel has played – well done, we are all proud of you.
