No parole for elderly Biggs

GREAT train robber Ronnie Biggs has been refused parole.

The 79-year-old was told by Justice Secretary Jack Straw that he was "wholly unrepentant" and would have been a free man many years ago had he served his original 30 year sentence.

Biggs, from Lambeth, South London, was a member of a gang which robbed £2.6 million from the Glasgow to London mail train in August 1963.

During the attack in Buckinghamshire, train driver Jack Mills, from Crewe, was struck over the head by a gang member.

Mr Mills died at the age of 74 from complications believed by his family to have resulted from the incident.

Biggs was given a 30-year prison sentence for his part in the robbery, but escaped after 15 months before going on the run abroad for more than 30 years.

He returned to the UK voluntarily in 2001 and is now barely able to walk and is fed through a tube.

Mr Straw said yesterday: "I am refusing the Parole Board's recommendation for parole. Biggs chose not to obey the law and respect the punishments given to him – the legal system in this country deserves more respect than this."
