Bike star set for honours

Thursday, July 30, 2009, 09:20

WORLD champion BMX rider Shanaze Reade is to have a cycle track in her home town re-named in her honour.

The sporting hero, who is now aged 20, first honed her cycling skills at the track in Tipkinder Park, Crewe.

She has been invited back there on Saturday for the ceremony and to also kick-start a weekend of activities devoted to bikes.

The weekend will also be in memory of Shanaze's coach Bob Field, who was the driving force behind the Cheshire Ghost Riders BMX Club.

On Saturday, there will be a fun day, including community street sports racing, a 'no clips' race, pit-bike racing, and a high-jump contest. The main race events take place on Sunday, with trophies and medals being awarded.

Tipkinder Park is run by Cheshire East Council and has the UK's first floodlit BMX track.
