WITH the track record of Stoke-on-Trent City Council's leaders – culminating in the brainless decision to waste £40 million on a senseless move of the council HQ – you could not trust them to spend 50p never mind £1billion.

If you want local decisions in spending £1bn you need the likes of Denise Coates CBE (Bet365), Sir Anthony Bamford (JCB) and billionaire John Caudwell to put in the framework and funding decision strategy.

It might mean paying them a chunky consultancy fee, but they know the area and have created sustainable jobs over a considerable period of time.

They recognise value for money and appoint people in senior posts who get it right.

“Reminder - the private sector (Banks and financial services) failed the country. So why expect them to solve Stoke's problems? Too many (and often foreign owned) private sector companies just scrounge off the public sector and hide their profligacy behind commercial confidentiality. Also do they pay their tax?”
