Regulars rock again in Donna Louise DVD

DRINKERS have pulled together their own version of Band Aid II to raise Christmas charity cash.

About 30 regulars at the Red Lion pub in Boundary, near Cheadle, have recorded a DVD containing footage of them singing three Christmas classics.

In one performance, a group of women regulars have donned festive fancy dress to perform Santa Baby. Then the male singers recorded their version of Let It Snow.

Finally, everyone joined together in a rousing version of the Shakin' Stevens's Christmas favourite, Merry Christmas Everyone.

Rehearsals were held in November with recording done under the direction of Cheadle High School music teacher Laura Goodhew, aged 25. Then the footage was edited together by her husband, Mark, aged 24.

Now the singers hope to raise more than £5,000 for the Donna Louise Children's Hospice Trust through sales of the DVD, and other charity fund-raisers, by August next year.

Red Lion landlords Matt and Vicky Pitt organised the charity event following the success of last year's Band Aid In Boundary, where regulars formed their own group to record a version of Bob Geldof and Midge Ure's Christmas charity classic, Do They Know It's Christmas.

Matt, aged 31, said: "We couldn't resist doing it again. Last year we raised over £400 and we had no problem getting volunteers, we had well over 30 people take part.

"We all had a laugh and enjoyed singing in front of the cameras. We are not the best singers in the world, but it was really good fun and it sounds better now it has been edited.

"We've chosen to raise money for Donna Louise this year because it is a good local charity. We've already raised £1,300 since September through raffles and different events, like our conker tournament."

Vicky, aged 30, said: "It is a lot of hard work, trying to organise for so many people to come to the pub and giving up five hours of their time during filming.

"It was a bit chaotic, but good fun."

All the pub regulars who weren't too shy had a line to sing solo or as part of a duet, as well as joining in with the choruses. Music teacher Laura, who had the job of coordinating the singing, said: "There's some good singers in the village. We're really pleased with it."

Red Lion regular Ruth Freeman, aged 46, of Boundary, joined in with her daughter Lucy, aged 11.

Ruth said: "I did it last year and it was great fun, so I couldn't resist this year.

"It was probably more fun because there was dressing up involved. Lucy loved it."

Ian Brown, aged 60, of Boundary, known as Biffa to his friends, said: "I don't mind getting up and singing in front of a lot of people.

"I've seen the DVD and you can see everyone enjoying themselves.

"It is really good fun and there's a lot of stuff on it that is personal to different people."

The DVD is available to order from the pub during opening times, or call 01538 753476.
