BRIGHT IDEAS: Schoolchildren put the finishing touches to a supermarket's Christmas decorations after winning a competition to design the store's baubles.

St Chad's Primary school, in Red Street, helped decorate the Christmas tree at Sainsbury's, Hanley, with card baubles they had decorated with glitter.

Department manager Ian Richardson said: "St Chad's designed the best baubles and got to put them up on their tree and won £200 for their school.

"The baubles look great in the store and it's clear a lot of effort went into them."

This weekend the store will be giving out balloon models and the festive flavour continues next week with carols on Monday and a mince pie eating contest on Tuesday. Each day up until Christmas Eve the store will also be giving presents away to a randomly selected customer.

Then, on Christmas Eve a lucky shopper will receive 12 presents.
