ROOKIE lifeguards can train for a lifesaving award at Chesterton Community Sports Centre.

Newcastle Borough Council is offering a 10-week Bronze Medallion course for the first time.

It is awarded by The Royal Life Saving Society UK and trains individuals to react in an emergency on land or in water.

Applicants must be aged 13 or over, although 12-year-olds will be accepted if they already have lifesaving experience.

Wendy Blantford, supervisor at Chesterton Community Sports Centre, said: "The Bronze Medallion is an internationally-recognised award that can be used as a stepping stone to train as a lifeguard.

"Participants learn a range of rescue methods and personal survival skills in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk.

"The course is expected to be popular and there are only 12 places available, so it is advisable to book as soon as possible."

Candidates have to complete a 50-metre swim test and 50-metre pool rescue in just over three minutes as part of the examination. The course costs £69.
