Blankets and food wanted for Romanian children
Volunteers at the Romania Charity Shop, Cheadle, are appealing for donations of food and blankets, which will be sent to the country.
A shop spokesman said: "We need extra help, because Eastern Europe is suffering its worst winter in years."
A spokesman for the Relief Fund For Romania said: "An astonishing 44 per cent of Romanians are reportedly living in poverty.
"Every fifth Romanian child is exploited – some 900,000 of the about five million children of Romania are forced to work. About 300,000 of these are forced to perform extremely hard manual labour."
Former lorry driver Chris Longhurst, shop manager, was so struck by the poverty and plight of the street children he encountered on a humanitarian mission to Romania that he founded a charity in 1998, with the sole aim of building an orphanage.
The orphanage, in Sucaeva, has now been completed thanks to fund-raising initiatives and sales from the shop.
To help, call the shop, in Tape Street, on 01538 753899. Pictured is Carrie-Anne Cornes, from the shop.
