STAFFORD: Detectives are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted outside a pub on the outskirts of Stafford.

The incident occurred just before 7pm on Friday, December 21 in the front beer garden area of the Seven Stars public house at Brocton, off the A34.

The 42-year-old victim sustained head and facial injuries and was taken to Stafford General Hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said it appeared the attacker had used a wooden chair to assault the victim.

An investigation into the incident is now underway and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Paul Whitehouse at Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 617 of December 21, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A 26-year-old man from Stafford has been arrested in connection with the incident. He has been bailed, pending further inquiries, to a later date.

BURSLEM: Defendant Shane Davies denied racially aggravated threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour. The 20-year-old, of Evans Street, Burslem, is accused of committing the offence on December 19. North Staffordshire magistrates heard he had previously failed to surrender to bail, and remanded him in custody. He will go on trial on February 18.

NEWCASTLE: A 33-year-old man has denied a charge of shoplifting.

Thomas Moss, of Dimsdale Parade East, Newcastle, is accused of stealing a bottle of Bells whisky from Tesco Express.

The case was adjourned at North Staffordshire Justice Centre yesterday for a trial to be held on February 20.

His bail was enlarged.

BENTILEE: Scott Gilbert, aged 25, has appeared in court to deny a charge of attempted burglary. Gilbert, of Beverley Drive, Bentilee, is accused of attempting to enter a Boots store with intent to steal on September 25. His trial was fixed for February 27 at North Staffordshire Justice Centre, in Newcastle.

HANLEY: The Smashh Theatre Company is offering workshops and classes for 14 to 19-year-olds who would like to develop skills in acting, devising and improvisation. The weekly classes will lead up to a small performance that will be produced at the Mitchell Arts Centre in March 2013. Classes take place every Monday. For details Telephone 07930 532372.
