ETRURIA: Campaigners who claim people in need are being forced off benefits are to stage a protest. The demonstration takes place at 2pm on Wednesday outside the Jobcentre Plus assessment centre in Festival Park. The protest follows on from a demonstration outside the Atos head office and Department for Work and Pensions in London.

Organisers claim that since Atos was given the contract by the Government to assess people for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), disabled people are no longer receiving cash which they need. A spokesman said: "Anyone angered by Atos and the Government's treatment of disabled people is welcome to join us."

STOKE: A report by Dr Jon Burnett of the Institute of Race Relations will be discussed at a meeting this week. Dr Burnett will be explaining his findings following a review of race relations in Stoke-on-Trent at a public meeting hosted by the North Staffordshire Campaign Against Racism and Fascism (NorSCARF), in the Civic Centre, Kingsway, on Thursday at 6.30pm. Other speakers include Dr Bill Dixon from Keele University, Jude Hawes from Challenge North Staffs and Jason Hill, president of North Staffs Trade Union Council.

STOKE: Community leaders are looking for people to sponsor events as part of a Christmas lights switch-on celebration. Stoke-on-Trent City Council ward member Andy Platt has worked with traders to resurrect Stoke's festive display after the council cut its Christmas lights budget. On December 1, there will be a range of activities for families as well as live entertainment, a craft fair and fireworks display.
