ABBEY HULTON: A former council care home is to be demolished. An application has been submitted to Stoke-on-Trent City Council to dismantle Austin House.

The council-run was closed down in 2008 as the council shut six homes.

It was then sold earlier this year.

The notice of demolition has been submitted by Stoke-on-Trent Housing Society.

It states that before the building is bulldozed, the asbestos floor, tiles and pipe lagging will be manually removed and placed into special skips supplied by Alsager Waste and disposed of in the correct manner.

The application states "the proposed demolition is required to avoid further vandalism, with the primary aim of a residential development on the site."

A decision on the application is expected by the beginning of next month.

STAFFORD: Overnight resurfacing work will be carried out today to improve journeys on the M6 just north of Junction 14 at Stafford.

Lane three of the northbound carriageway will be closed from 9.45pm but the hard shoulder will be used as a running lane for traffic.

Highways Agency project manager Jessica Kenny said: "Once the work is complete road users will benefit from a smoother, safer road surface.

"The work will be carried out at night to minimise disruption. Delays will be limited but we advise road users to allow extra time for their journeys and to drive carefully through the works area."

The work takes place until 5.30am tomorrow.

LONGTON: Shoppers, traders and residents are invited to share their views on how to improve Longton. The AGM of the Longton Events Board will be held on Wednesday at 5pm at Cafe Continental. Email rob.britton1@ntlworld.com.
