BY DAY, Alan Bruce is a JCB analyst, but by night he is practising the art of playing a deadly villain.

For Alan has been cast as Abanazzar in Stone Little Theatre's pantomime, Aladdin.

It is the first time Alan will play a "baddie", despite having performed on stage since 1995.

The 49-year-old, who is also a musician, is usually cast in more friendly roles, but despite it being his first attempt at playing a villain, he is determined to be a successful one.

Alan says: "Hopefully I'll get lots of boos and hisses and send everyone home shivering with fear."

And Alan has even adapted one of his tunes specially for the performance.

"I've re-written the lyrics to one of my songs called No Rest For The Wicked, to include references to the characters from Aladdin," he said.

"No doubt the panto will feature this year's The X Factor winner's song as well."

Walton Priory Middle School is hosting the show due to the closure of Bibby Sports and Social Club, Stone Little Theatre's usual venue.

The 22-strong cast, whose ages range from eight to 65, includes Melissa Potts, as Aladdin, and Holly Dobson, as Princess Mandarin.

The traditional family panto sees Abanazzar capture Princess Madarin and whisk her off to Egypt, with Aladdin in hot pursuit.

Despite following the traditional story-line, audiences can expect many twists and surprises, including one scene acted out in ultraviolet light.

Chris Bell, director and co-founder of the group, believes the UV lighting adds a new dimension to the show.

He says: "Alan Frayn, the author of the script, created the idea and it's absolutely spectacular.

"The lights allow the magic carpets to fly and snakes to slither around the stage. It really is a terrific scene."

With an abundance of jokes and laughter provided by policemen, Yu-dun-wong and Hu-dun-pong, who often get themselves in a muddle, the show covers everything from comedy and excitement to shock and awe.

Aladdin marks the 31st performance from the Stone Little Theatre, which was founded in 1979.

Aladdin is at Walton Priory Middle School from February 17 to 20, with evening performances starting at 7.30pm and matinees from 2.30pm. For details and ticket prices, call Chris on 01785 816444.
