After hearing of the latest proposals regarding park areas in Uttoxeter no longer being "dog friendly", I have to ask who came up with such an idea?

Having lived in Uttoxeter all my life, in very close proximity to the Oldfields Park/Bramshall Road recreation ground, I am aware who uses these areas the most.

For 365 days a year, early in the morning, late at night, rain, hail or shine, people with their dogs enjoy the fresh air, freedom, and the exercise.

Yes, there are some people who are selfish enough not to clean up after their dog but are we all to be considered irresponsible?

We go to the Bramshall Park daily, our two dogs have a run around with a ball.

They need to have a little freedom, the joy and excitement they show when they are free is beyond compare. It also gives them the chance to socialise with other dogs, which helps dispense with any aggression.

They then go back on the leash and we continue our walk around the outskirts of the town which is now littered with fast food cartons and bags of rubbish thrown out of car windows.

Most of the litter bins have been vandalised along Dove Way. I have carried a used dog bag for a good two miles before finding a bin.

During 2009 I have had cause to report or complain on a number of occasions about:

Broken glass on the bridge in the Bramshall Road Park.

Broken glass and litter around the opening to the park by the swimming pool.

Large holes left in the ground from the wooden posts after an event in the Bramshall Road Park.

Litter, food cartons, pop bottles, glass, carrier bags, beer cans.

One sunny day or a school holiday and I can guarantee the whole park area is spoilt by litter.

Dog owners pay their community charge like everyone else. The open spaces are there for us all to enjoy.

Our pets give us a great deal of pleasure, an important part of a family unit, teaching children to be responsible kind and caring.

I hope you will reconsider and let our dogs have the little freedom they deserve.
