SPORTS activities – from street dancing to simulated surfing – will be on offer to young people as part of a community day.

The Respect day on Saturday takes place at Mitchell High School in Bucknall.

Respect days are organised by Stoke-on-Trent City Council and other agencies such as the police and health service to bring residents together and encourage them to have pride in their neighbourhoods.

Street dancing, football coaching, a surf simulator and graffiti artist will feature in Saturday's event as well as music by Jason Huxley, from Milton, street games and the chance for young people to try their hand at being a DJ.

Youngsters aged nine and over are being targeted to take part to encourage them to get involved in their community.

Councillor Joan Bell, Stoke-on-Trent City Council portfolio holder for community safety, said: "The Respect Action Days have become increasingly popular with local communities wherever we hold them. We try to give everyone who lives in the areas concerned a chance to speak to the city council, Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue. The success of the Respect days shows that if we all work together we can make a better, safer city."
