WORK has started on a multi-million housing development in Meir.

A selection of 131 two, three and four-bedroom properties are being built at the former housing estate now known as Pipers View.

The project, which is being overseen by Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Barratt Mercia, is due to be completed in 2015.

It is hoped that the houses will generate a revenue in excess of £11 million.

Councillor Ruth Rosenau, cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transportation, said: "Offering good quality, aspirational housing in an excellent location such as Pipers View will not only encourage our residents to stay in Stoke-on-Trent but it will also attract other people to come and live in our city, improving the economy and regenerating the area.”

“It's sad that the council turfed out established residents and hard-working folk in order to knock down perfectly good houses in order to clear the land to sell it to developers. However, at least there is some worthwhile investment going on in Meir. True, it probably won't attract outsiders to the city but the new development will continue to give city-dwellers choice about housing. I would happily move back to Meir (where I bought my first house many years ago) if only the council/local authority boundaries would shift a bit so that Meir falls into Staffs Moorlands or Stafford Borough. I never had a jot of trouble whilst living in Meir and it was a lot quieter in terms of noise and trouble than where I live now.”

    “From the Barrett Homes website:

"Located in a delightful suburb of Stoke-On-Trent"

I hope the irony of that statement is not lost on the locals”

Sadly, I am afraid she is in Cloud cuckoo land if she thinks that a few new houses will encourage pepole from other areas to come to Stoke on Trent. Low pay, poor job prospects if you want to do anything other than to work in a call centre or care home”
