PARENTS could be given parking tickets for dropping their children off outside a school while roadworks take place.

Severn Trent Water is spending £300,000 on a new sewer system to prevent flooding in the Weston Coyney area.

  1. PROBLEM: Park Hall Primary School.

    PROBLEM: Park Hall Primary School.

While the work is carried out, buses are being diverted along Carberry Way, which runs past Park Hall Primary School.

Residents who have previously raised concerns about parking outside the school are worried that the addition of buses will pose an extra safety risk.

The school has advised parents not to drop their children off on the road while the work is carried out, and Stoke-on-Trent City Council says it is ready to send out parking wardens if necessary.

Jean Kirkham, who lives in Carberry Way, said the problems had been going on for several years.

The 82-year-old said: "Parents park wherever they want on the road when they come to pick their children up. They double-park, block driveways and I've even seen them wait in the middle of the road if there are no spaces.

"I've lived here for three years and I've spoken to the school, parents and the council about the problems with parking, but nothing gets done about it.

"It's hell at the minute, and that's before the buses start coming down here.

"I don't think it's a good idea to send them down this road while the roadworks are done, because there won't be any room for them to get down at certain times.

"I don't drive a car but it worries me what would happen if an emergency vehicle needed to get to me."

Malcolm Oliver, aged 41, who also lives in Carberry Way, said: "I can see there being problems with the increased traffic if the cars continue to park outside the school.

"It's dangerous as it is with all the cars parking on the road."

The works started yesterday and involve installing a new sewer through the junction of Caverswall Road, Weston Road and Park Hall Road.

There are a series of road closures and temporary traffic light systems at the junction of Caverswall Road, Weston Road and Park Hall Road.

Caverswall Road will be closed all week at its junction with Weston Road.

Park Hall Road, meanwhile, will be closed at its junction with Weston Road between November 3 and 5.

While Park Hall Road is closed, the buses will be using Carberry Way as a diversion and will pass in front of Park Hall Primary School.

A spokesman for Severn Trent said: "The work started on Monday and should be finished at the latest by November 16.

"The work will prevent flooding in the area."

“It isn't only vehicles that have problems getting past schools (every school is the same where parking is concerned). I often walk my dogs past Park Hall school, you can barely walk up the pavement because cars are double parked and parked part on the pavement at that. Many arrive at the school some 30 minutes before kids are due out so they can park the closest...time that could be taken by....dare I say it....walking? Then of course the ignorant parents have doors open while faffing in the cars so you can't pass. And while we are talking about idle school run drivers, the majority of the people who pass me while texting/talking on their mobile phone or driving that little too quickly for the road can also be seen parked outside the schools.”

“No doubt these irresponsible idiots would be blaming someone else if their own child was injured because someone had parked outside the school.”

“My kids always walked to primary, but I can understand some parents' problems; this council has closed down several primaries, amalgamating them with others and increasing the distance kids have to go to reach school. In my area, Marychurch Primary was shut and the kids reallocated to Townsend, or 'Kingsland' as it became, meaning some families now had as much as a mile added to their school run. Not much for an adult, but for a five or six year old, quite a tiring walk, and involving a very busy main road. Don't assume people parking by a school live just around the corner. It's even worse for high schools; my daughter's high school has kids coming from as much as 8 miles away. When everyone walked to school, the schools were closer to home and the roads less busy and dangerous.”

“Couldn't the parents park in their own driveway when dropping their kids off at school?”

“They should put in a temporary ban on parking along Carberry Way during drop off and pick up times. There are plenty of other roads further away from the school that parents can park in and (dare I say it) walk more than 20 metres to the school gates. If they want buses to use Carberry Way as a diversion, they need to get rid of the school parking chaos first. Otherwise, find an alternative diversion for buses.

Seriously though, why is Weston Coyney a potential flooding risk? I've never known it to flood before. Or are Severn Trent concerned about bursting sewers?

Come on, somebody with some common-sense make a proper, informed decision.”

“Dropping off on double yellows is permitted unless specifically not allowed (ie designated by signage). Assisted boarding/alighting applies when escorting infirm or very young people to a safe place. It would therefore depend on the child's age and what the road markings and TRO actually say. However the waiting time should be minimal and less than the CEO's observation time which is usually supposed to be 5 mins.”
