Warning over swine flu at public events
SICK people with suspected swine flu are being urged not to attend local sport, community or leisure events where they could spread the virus.
NHS North Staffordshire is asking people to stay at home if they have any of the typical symptoms of swine flu, which include a sudden fever – a high temperature of 38°C/100.4°F or above – and a sudden cough. Other symptoms may include headaches, tiredness, chills and aching muscles.
Dr John Chesworth, medical director of NHS North Staffordshire, said: "We are just at the start of the football season and this is the peak time of year for festivals and local community events, so we are asking people to help stop the spread of swine flu.
"We are urging anyone who feels that they might have swine flu or who has any of the above symptoms, particularly if associated with a temperature, to stay at home and stay away from social gatherings such as football matches, barbecues, fairs and community events.
"In fact, we are asking people with swine flu to keep their contact to other people to a minimum. The best thing to do if someone has swine flu is to stay at home, as this will help recovery – and stay away from other people to stop the infection spreading."
The total number of swine flu deaths in the West Midlands is seven. NHS officials say the virus is continuing to spread across the region, but at a slower rate seen since the start of the outbreak.
