HIGHWAYS chiefs have warned motorists to expect hold-ups during major roadworks on a key route to Alton Towers.

Resurfacing work is taking place on a stretch of the B5417 at High Shutt, near Cheadle.

Staffordshire County Council is also putting kerbs in place along Oakamoor Road.

Contractors will work over some weekends to speed up the project.

Cheadle and Checkley county councillor Mike Maryon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "The B5417 is a well used rural road that is often busy with motorists going to Alton Towers.

"Resurfacing the carriageway will be a big boost, but with such a big scheme, there will be a certain amount of disruption."

The work will continue until April.
