WORD FROM THE WEB
ELDERLY wheelchair user Owen Nugent was left 'appalled' when a bus driver refused to allow him on board (Sentinel, January 14).
Why does this story not surprise me? I use buses most days and am shocked at the attitude of some of the drivers. They really do think they are doing you a favour by stopping and picking you up.

I gave up running for buses years ago. Unless you are a 19-year-old girl it's futile.

I recently asked a supervisor at Hanley bus station whether a bus was late or had been cancelled and was treated with similar contempt. I made a formal complaint and two months later have still had no response from customer services. There needs to a more commercially-competitive environment and choice for customers to push up standards.

A CASH-STRAPPED council is to spend £220,000 on a £1.1m bridge persistently targeted by vandals (Sentinel, January 14).
Must be plenty of more important things to spend money on.

Weren't the 'regeneration experts' told at the outset that the design of this bridge was not appropriate? Did they press on regardless? How much has the whole mess cost?

I walk past this bridge often. It serves no function whatsoever, it doesn't lead to anywhere. There are other bridges nearby that function properly. It's baffling that someone would sign-off such an obvious 'fail' in the first place and that they haven't been held to account. The fact more money is being wasted on this is incredible.
