THIS week's cold snap with sub-zero temperatures has seen motorists flocking to suppliers for winter tyres.

Kevin Ecclestone, who runs For Tyres on Werrington Road, Bucknall, says: "The phone has hardly stopped ringing. As soon as the snow and ice was forecast last weekend we started getting a lot of calls and this week we have been really busy. The message has certainly got out that fitting winter tyres makes driving so much easier and safer in these conditions.''

Conventional tyres start to lose their performance and do not grip as well when temperatures fall below seven degrees and struggle to cope with the current conditions. They have different tread patterns, are made with a softer compound and as an added advantage give a smoother ride too.

Kevin adds: "A set of winter tyres for a family hatchback can cost less than the excess on an insurance policy if there is a bump and as well as making financial sense it dramatically reduces the chance of getting stuck. It is just an easier, less stressful way to drive in the winter.''
