MASKED knifeman Christopher Hall got more than he bargained for when he burst into a corner shop – and was wrestled to the floor by an assistant.

Dramatic CCTV images show the brave worker arming himself with a bottle of wine after being threatened by the robber.

A greeting cards stand is then knocked to the ground before the two men struggle on the floor and Hall is unmasked.

Both men then leave the Burslem shop before Hall, of Smallthorne, calmly walks back in and tries to force open the till with his knife.

The 29-year-old who escaped with just three packets of cigarettes, has now been jailed for three years.

Staffordshire Police have praised the quality of the Dartmouth Street shop's eight CCTV cameras, which captured the raid.

The worker, who has not been named, was left traumatised and no longer works at the shop.

In statement, he said: "I believed he was going to kill me. I will never forget this incident." Student Majuran Kathirkanathan, aged 26, of Cauldon Road, Shelton, who works at the shop which is owned by his family, said: "There have been cases of people trying to run off with spirits before but nothing as violent as this.

"We are very happy that he has been jailed for three years."

“Must agree with camband - the way the eejit casually chooses his favourite brand of cigarettes is surreal.

Am I right in thinking we're not talking about the guy who will cure cancer or light our cities for a month on a bag of sugar here?”

“Reading the comments I am left to assume that most of you feel that it's okay to take a knife into a shop to steal from it? I don't care how bad your life gets there is no justification to go armed into a shop to rob it. Life is ****, it's beyond hard for me at the moment but I don't take that out on anyone else. It's hardly made his life better now has it?”

“So, having taken another look at this strange piece of film -I'm left wondering how the hell neither of them got cut from the knife in that violent 'arm-wrestling frantic struggle'?

And also striking is the way, after the shop-worker flees out the door, the violent criminal calmly goes about 'perusing what's best to take' -as he looks over the stock -and even when the shop-worker returns and stands by the door 'admonishing' him -he more or less ignores him and continues with his 'picking and choosing' what best to take.

Makes one wonder what it was about? Was it a 'rubber knife'?”

“'Traumatised ....'? Didn't he go back into the shop, after managing to run out at one point, -and 'have another go at the knife-man'? I must watch it again.

We are constantly reminded by this report -to be forever on our guard against 'HYPE'. If someone tripped over a matchstick and broke their little finger, it would finish up in the Sentinel as 'Man Trips of Massive Log -and Breaks his Back'.”

“'The worker, who has not been named, was left traumatised and no longer works at the shop.' - He was in the shop yesterday behind the counter bragging that he was front page of the Sentinel urging people to buy it - Yes, very traumatised indeed!”

“There is a lot in the sentinel just lately of the crime that is going on within that area/ward. Perhaps he should stand as councillor, maybe a police commissioner in the making. The Terminator, stand up against pervez, looks like he has got the bottle.Who is the councillor for that ward ? Oh dear, Joy Garner. I'll be back, she is probably never there., especially this time of year.”
