Then and Now Upper Market Square, Hanley, in the early 20th century
A LONE horse and cart can be seen to the right of the earlier picture, taken in the first part of the 20th century, where a statue of Sir Stanley Matthews now stands proud.
St John's Church, the Grade II-listed building built around 1788, can be seen at the very top of Town Road, but its image is barely noticeable in the later picture.
Derelict for more than 20 years following a fire, the building was designed by an unknown artist who introduced the use of cast iron into church buildings.
It's all change in today's view as The Potteries Shopping Centre dominates Upper Market Square.
Filled with numerous high streets shops, the 1988 creation is one of the city's main assets, drawing thousands of shoppers each week, while a row of banks, shops and cafes now line the right side of Town Road.
