Unit patients pick up litter
PATIENTS from a low-security mental health hospital are trying to build bridges with villagers who opposed the unit.
They are taking part in litter-picking sessions in Ashley, near Loggerheads, during weekly trips escorted by staff from Ashley House.
Centre managers say it is giving the patients an opportunity to give something back to the community.
They also believe the project will help their residents form closer links with the village.
Group organiser Lucy Berrisford said: "Patients' self-esteem has been boosted as a direct result of them participating."
Four patients take part in each visit as part of their rehabilitation, skills and education development.
While keeping the place tidy, they also study the short and long-term benefits of recycling.
Three years ago villagers blocked a plan to extend the unit, which is home to some convicted criminals.
