Old maternity block demolished
FINAL PUSH: Demolition of the former maternity block at the City General Hospital is well under way and expected to be complete within the next two weeks.
The maternity block, which opened in 1968, welcomed a quarter of a million babies into the world before its services were transferred to the new £40 million maternity hospital earlier this year.
Andrew Ashcroft, communications manager for the hospital, said: "The demolition is continually sprayed with water to keep dust levels down. It is a complex process as the building is so close to other clinical buildings."
The majority of the building will be recycled, with parts earmarked as materials for new buildings at the site.

“i find it quite sad really. i had both my girls in there, and i was born there. to see it in its half demolished state made me feel quite emotional. the memories of my pregnacies nd subsequet deliveries came flooding back. the building is so dismal, grey and abandoned looking which is a very stark contrast to my memories. maybe its just my hormones lol”

“Is 40 years a typical life for a public building? It seems a terrible waste of resources to demolish and rebuild. Will the "new" building be biting the dust in 2050?”
