Work has started on Tunstall's long-awaited war memorial.

Builders are constructing a curved wall in Tunstall Memorial Gardens, which will bear the names of hundreds of townsfolk who died serving their country.

Fund-raisers have spent two-and-a-half years raising more than £9,000 to go towards the estimated £21,000 cost of building the memorial.

It was originally hoped that the memorial would have been unveiled by May but it is now anticipated that work will be completed by September, when the plaque will be officially unveiled.

Doug Green, chairman of Tunstall Memorial Plaque Fund, pictured, said: "We have been put back four times, but know it is finally underway."

Plans for a war memorial in Tunstall first began circulating a decade ago.
