MOTORISTS have been warned to beware treacherous road conditions amid a blanket of black ice on untreated roads.

Main roads such as the A500 and A50 have been gritted, although The Sentinel has received calls about slippery conditions on side roads.

Around 72 people ring 999 after falling on ice, say West Midlands Ambulance Service.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has announced it will close all football pitches this Saturday and Sunday.

Around 14 schools are closed around North Staffordshire.
