KEBAB shop worker Yusuf Kahraman has been jailed for a year after he was found with fake identity documents.

The sentence comes after the failed Turkish asylum seeker, who faces deportation, boasted to police that he would be back in Britain within a month.

He had been working at Stone Kebab House, in Church Street, Stone, when police searched the premises on February 18.

Prosecutor Robert Price told Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court Kahraman was arrested because he was a failed asylum seeker.

He said: "Police searched Kahraman's bedroom upstairs and found three documents in a pocket, a Bulgarian passport, a Bulgarian identity card and a driver's licence, in two different names.

"The passport was a real person's, the others were bogus."

Kahraman, aged 36, admitted his guilt to police in an interview.

And he even boasted he would be back in Britain within a month.

He told officers he arrived in the UK in 2002 from Turkey, but in 2006 his asylum application was refused and he was deported.

In 2007, he approached criminals in his homeland and paid them the equivalent of £300 to get false documents so he could travel through Europe.

Mr Price said: "They created documents for him, a false Cypriot ID card.

"He travelled from Cyprus and from there to the UK.

"He accepted he worked at the kebab house. He said the documents found in his possession were sent to him through the post and he had not used any of them."

Kahraman pleaded guilty to possessing false documents with intent.

Anis Ali, defending, said his client's guilty plea was the only mitigation available to him.

And he added: "He understands a custodial sentence must follow.

"He understands he is going to be deported. He looks forward to being reunited with his family."

Judge Paul Glenn said the sentence should mean Kahraman will be automatically deported.

He told the criminal: "You knew exactly what you were doing.

"You came to the UK in 2002 and your asylum claim was rejected in 2006 and you were returned to Turkey.

"You were plainly intent on returning and you paid money for false documents.

"Having again claimed asylum in 2008, you effectively disappeared.

"You knew full well you were unlikely to be allowed access to this country and you certainly knew you were not legally entitled to work.

"After your arrest, you made light of this matter, boasting that you would be back in this country within one month or that you would go to France or Belgium. So your conduct was persistent.

"The inference I draw from these Bulgarian documents is that you had them to establish another identity if you needed to."
