Tumble Tots in Meir Heath has been cancelled with mums and dads offered no explanation.

The group, which meets at Meir Heath and Rough Close Village Hall in Grange Road, featured a soft play area and activities for pre-school youngsters.

But parents arrived on Thursday to find the doors closed and locked.

One woman claimed to have paid £35 in advance to cover the cost of classes until Christmas.

The mum, who preferred not to be named, said: “I went down with a little boy I care for and the doors were shut.

“I waited for another parent to come along and neither of us knew what was going on. We were just left waiting out in the cold.

“My issue is that I handed over the money in advance, so they have no excuse to close like this.

“There was nothing to inform us that it wouldn’t be going ahead and the little boy was crying on the way home because he loves Tumble Tots.”

Tumble Tots is run by a national company, Tumble Tots (UK) Limited, and operates different franchises in local communities.

The company has apologised for the sudden closure and promised to refund any outstanding money.

A Tumble Tots spokesman said an investigation has been launched.

He said: “Tumble Tots (UK) Limited is extremely sorry for the disappointment and inconvenience caused to their members in the area.

“We will be investigating this issue with the local franchisee as a matter of urgency.

“The company would also like to assure members that we will do our utmost to rectify this situation and that any advance session fees paid will be honoured at an alternative centre or refunded.”

Barry Shaw, chairman of the village hall’s management committee, said members took the ‘regrettable’ decision to terminate the renting of the hall for Tumble Tots because rent had not been paid.

He added: “We are just as disappointed as the parents that they were not informed.”

Tumble Tots was established in 1979 by Bill Cosgrave, coach for the British Olympic Gymnastics team of 1968.

The programme has benefited more than a million children since it formed and promotes a healthy and active lifestyle to youngsters.
