HUNDREDS of jobs could be at risk at car-maker Toyota.

The Japanese firm has announced it will have a "headcount surplus" of 750 at its factory in Burnaston, Derbyshire, when the plant drops to a single production line in August.

The factory, left, employs about 3,500 people, including 400 from the ST14, Uttoxeter area postcode. Directors say they are not currently considering compulsory redundancies.

Toyota announced last year that it was mothballing one of its two production lines at Burnaston, which makes the firm's Auris and Avensis models. A spokesman said: "During a meeting with our employee representatives on Monday we confirmed that we will have a headcount surplus of around 750 members from August onwards. The key point of Monday's discussion was how to manage this situation in order to ensure we have a sustainable business for the long term."

Staff at Burnaston have been working a four-and-a-half-day week since last April, which is likely to remain in place until the end of March. They returned to full-time hours during August and September to meet the demand created by scrappage schemes in Europe, but reverted to four-and-a-half days the following month.
