TORY HOME TRUTHS: Dyed-in-the-wool Stafford Tory John Wilson seemed surprised that fellow true blues supported his views (The Sentinel, August 30). They have conveniently forgotten that former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was booted out of power by her own Cabinet, which acknowledged the immense damage that five million unemployed and three million sick-listed wreaked upon our angry society.

Mrs Thatcher, in attempting to counter this truth, suggested that there was no such thing as "society". These forgetful fellows should also be reminded that British Forces suffered greater numbers of casualties in the Falklands than in Iraq and that Margaret Thatcher's book royalties will no doubt pass to Mark Thatcher – a deserving cause if ever there was one.

“How on earth can BG Jones draw any similarity between the Falklands War and the Iraq War? The Falklands was sovereign British territory which was invaded by a foreign power. Iraq was a sovereign nation invaded by us. The people of the Falklands wanted to remain British. After the war they didn't run amok looting the place, nor did they start looking for ever more ingenious ways of bombing each other. Mrs. Thatcher didn't lie to Parliament in order to justify the war; she didn't need to, self defence was justification enough. In short the Falklands War was a just one and the Iraq War was anything but.”
