Then from 5pm, Signal 1's DJs will start the countdown to the big switch-on.

There will be live performances from Loveable Rogues, five-piece indie-rock band Six Towns and pop singer Anttix.

Around 8,000 people are expected to attend the lights switch-on.

“a great night was had by all culminating in a mass brawl at hanley bus station where arrests were made and a certain section of our society were arrested for carrying knives..yes come to hanley the centre of the councils universe, the cultural quarter, and the proposed multi million pounds shopping centre and £40 million pounds civic centre..a great time will be had by all...life insurance optional...”

“Given that in another Sentinel Report in today's Sentinel -where a man has been jailed for 40 months for killing his friend whilst speeding -And the policeman concerned with the investigation into the tragic accident that resulted from this reckless piece of driving saying in Court -(quote):- 'People should obey the rules of the road...'

Perhaps the headline should have read:- "RECKLESS DRIVER (fined for going 36 mph over the speed limit) -TO TURN ON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS IN HANLEY".

Tony Pulis was booked and fined earlier in the year for doing 96mph -yes NINETY-SIX mph in a 60mph zone on the M42 south Birmingham. I bet the police and in particular Sergeant Ian Tanner, are dismayed by the choice of 'celebrity' invited by the Council to do the 'Christmas honours'.
A brilliant role model and Ambassador for 'Boy-racers' everywhere.

Parents must be fearing the worst over the coming Xmas Holiday Period when deaths on the road involving young people (many of them football fans -impressionable and easily influenced by the likes of Pulis and co) as the festive season approaches and 'spirits are high' -and drink and speed increase, and indeed last year were particularly bad compared to recent years.

Young drivers are ignoring the message sent out by the Police and instead listening to the message sent out by the likes of Pulis -And Crouch.”

“I can just imagine it, during the Olympic events the events team manager going up to TP saying, " By the way Tony, how dya fancy doing the lights at Xmas as well? Oh Imran, do you want to come along?" What a bone idle bunch. I thought the idea was to make Hanley into a cosmopolitan city centre which attracted people from other areas. Seems a bit parochial to me. And what about PV fans? Hardly inclusive is it?”

“why on earth do they do this during the week, same as bonfire night. surley these events would be better held at the weekend when kids are off school and parents can take them along knowing thet have no school the next day. also why do we have the same old faces year after year after year opening and closing or taking part. is it not time for new faces to come along and bring new life into the events. and i really hope that the weather holds off but i think everyone is in for a soaking, if not Councillor M Pervez will surley do this if he makes a speach”

“Great time, the last bus to Birches Head is 6-30pm so the people with children will have to catch taxi's home or are the council going to give the children permission to have a day off school when they don't get home untill 9-9,30. Well timed. Another unwanted expense for a cashstrapped area. Use some of the 40 million that you're wasting on new offices to run a good local much needed bus service that First aren't poviding.”
