The Sentinel

T HESE last few years have been difficult for those running businesses across our county. The challenges the recession has offered up have seen many firms collapse. Often, the stories of these failures are the only ones we hear about. Success during this crisis has only been whispered about in darkened corners of boardrooms. This is often due to the fear that talking about how well you are doing is insensitive at a time when many companies and workers are struggling to make ends meet. It is said, that a recession only ends when people stop talking about it. The same surely can be said of failure. Perhaps, if we can, we should try to talk about the success of our businesses. It is true that success breeds success. So if we all start chatting about what great things are happening in the business world in Staffordshire, some confidence may slowly start to return. And with confidence, comes investment, then jobs and finally a return to prosperity. So we will not apologise to anyone today for launching The Sentinel Business awards with a fanfare.

T his is because you don't actually have to look too hard to see how amazingly well hundreds of our firms are doing. Indeed, it would be fair to say that for these firms to have survived and prospered during this time highlights how superb the people who run and work at them really are. So we are more than proud to spend the next few months showcasing some of the finest companies in the county. What you will witness is that we have a broad church of firms making, servicing and creating. We have excellence in apprenticeships, young and older entrepreneurs, innovative people, tourism experts and champions of the environment. In fact, whatever is offered across business Britain, we offer it here, on our doorstep. So we would like all those who run a business to enter the awardsand allow readers the chance to celebrate with us your achievements.
