THE concert of the week is at Biddulph on Wednesday when Scottish traditional legends Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham play at Biddulph Town Hall. Aly Bain is Scotland's supreme traditional style fiddler. His playing is unique with a vibrant, unmistakable tone that has earned him a following of ardent fans throughout the world.

Widely regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative accordion players of the times, Phil Cunningham has set the standards by which many young players fix their sights today.

Their show is an unforgettable experience and one not to be missed (01782 514896).

On Saturday at Clonter Opera Theatre, in Swetthenham Heath, Congleton, has a folk evening which features The New Rope String Band and Bram Taylor. The New Rope String band is made up of four talented musicians playing beautiful and invigorating acoustic music from various traditions around the world. Experienced old-hands Pete Challoner and Tim Dalling (from the Old Rope String Band) have joined forces with experienced old-time musicians Jock Tyldesley and Vera van Heeringen. Between them they are a very amusing outfit who have to be seen to be believed. Complementing the evening is North-West mainstay Bram Taylor (01260 224514).

Saturday also sees a Cajun dance and workshop at Cheadle Guildhall featuring award-winning Cajun band, Elvis Fontenot And The Sugar Bees, pictured above. Cajun dancing is fun to learn and Sylvia Heath will be teaching the basic steps (01782 514896).

Sandbach Folk Club, which meets at The Market Tavern every Tuesday, this week sees the return of the contemporary duo, The Pelican Babies (07815721933).

Incidentally, Sandbach Folk Club is holding a special double-headlining concert in Sandbach Town Hall on Friday, May 21 featuring popular singer/songwriter Harvey Andrews and German guitar wizard Ulli Boegershausen who is making his only UK appearance (07971 663778).

Lastly, with effect from tonight, the folk evening currently held at the Fox And Goose, in Foxt, will be moving to The Foxlowe, at the top of the market square in Leek. Entrance will be through the door at the side, with the proceedings taking place in the restaurant at the front of the building (01538 360256).
