MORE than 1,200 cancer patients have avoided visiting hospital – thanks to a telephone helpline.

The helpline is attached to the award-winning emergency assessment bay in the cancer centre at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

The unit allows patients with urgent problems caused by the illness to fast-track A&E and be taken straight to cancer specialists.

The four-bed bay, which opened three years ago, has just won the patient experience classification at the Quality in Care Excellence in Oncology 2012 awards.

Now new figures show how its helpline has contributed to its success.

Matron Sue Malbon said: "Getting help without having to come to hospital can only be good for the patient. Patients, carers and professionals really appreciate the service."
