EMERGENCY planners, medical experts and health bosses are due to be summoned to the city council today to give details on how Stoke-on-Trent is fighting the swine flu outbreak.

The authority's integrated health, safety and emergency planning manager, Peter Burgess, and Claire Machin, from NHS Stoke-on-Trent, are among those set to provide answers in a presentation at a meeting of the council's health scrutiny committee.

The meeting at Stoke's Civic Centre will be chaired by Councillor Alby Walker. Two cases of swine flu have been confirmed in North Staffordshire, including a teacher from Longton's Edensor College, who contracted it during his stag party in Las Vegas.

The World Health Organisation has announced the swine flu outbreak is now a pandemic; the first in more than 40 years.

    “They didn't get it wrong.

They didn't close the other school a few weeks ago because the teacher contracted swine flu overseas.

In this case, the child has contracted swine flu while attending school and been in contact with other pupils. So in this case they need to close the school to prevent further spread.”

“Why is the meeting needed? Stoke on Trent council were only saying a few weeks ago something like there was no risk and there was no need to close schools.
Strange this, did they get it wrong?”
