Michael Owen finally scored for Stoke City

Stoke frustrated the Swans in the first half but were outplayed after the break by a classy home side who went 3-0 up with goals from Ben Davies and two strikes from Jonathan de Guzman.

Owen headed home Cameron Jerome’s cross in injury time but that was too little, too late for Stoke.

Tony Pulis sprang a surprise up front as Kenwyne Jones was left on the bench. Peter Crouch started as the lone front-man in Stoke’s 4-4-1-1 system with Charlie Adam in the supporting role.

Andy Wilkinson had failed to recover from a back injury so Dean Whitehead started at right back with Geoff Cameron on the left.

Stoke were under early pressure, but escaped on three minutes when Michu blazed over from the edge of the area after Itay Shechter got the better of Robert Huth.

However Stoke began to settle down and got plenty of men behind the ball to force the Swans to shoot from long-range.

Ki Seung-Yeung blasted over before Stoke tried their luck on 26 minutes as Peter Crouch’s ambitious volley sailed into the Stoke fans behind Michel Vorm’s goal.

Matthew Etherington played a one-two with Charlie Adam to race free in the left of the area, but the winger drilled his shot into the side–netting.

However, Swansea should have taken the lead on 37 minutes when Angel Rangel looked up on the right and picked out Michu with a superb cross. The striker had a free header and only Asmir Begovic to beat, but missed the target by inches.

The Swans squandered a second chance moments later when Wayne Routledge got round Jon Walters on the left of the area. The winger pulled the ball across for de Guzman, but he missed his kick from eight yards out.

Stoke were on the defensive for most of the half but did threaten on 44 minutes when they broke from the edge of their own area. Etherington tried his luck from 18 yards but his low strike was well held by Vorm.

Half Time: Swansea 0-0 Stoke

Stoke fell behind just four minutes into the second half thanks to a terrific goal from Swans left back Ben Davies. He gathered the ball and turned past Walters and Shawcross to burst into the area before placing his shot across Begovic and into the far corner.

A difficult task for Stoke looked beyond them after 57 minutes as Swansea doubled their lead after winning a free kick 25 yards from goal.

De Guzman curled the ball over the wall and away from Begovic and into the top corner.

Tony Pulis responded by bringing on Jones and Jerome for Crouch and Adam on 63 minutes. That left Etherington on the right wing, Jerome on the left and Walters and Jones up front.

Stoke were second best but almost got a foothold in the game on 70 minutes when Etherington sent over an inswinging cross which was flicked towards his own goal by Ashley Williams. Jerome saw the ball late and could only stab it over the bar from six yards.

Swansea were more ruthless on 80 minutes with another excellent goal. Substitute Danny Graham met a long-diagonal ball from the right with a cushioned volley to send de Guzman sprinting behind the Stoke defence.

De Guzman composed himself and steered the ball past Begovic to put the home side 3-0 up.

Owen came on for Etherington after 85 minutes and produced a poacher’s finish in injury time. Jerome crossed from the left of the area to where Owen had found space. The striker did the rest with a glancing header across Vorm.

Swansea: Vorm, Rangel, Monk, Williams, Davies, de Guzman, Shechter (Graham, 74) Sung-Yeung, Routledge, Hernandez (Lamah, 64), Michu (Britton, 78).

Subs: Tremmel, Bartley, Dyer, Tiendalli.

Stoke: Begovic, Whitehead, Huth, Shawcross, Cameron, Walters, Whelan, Nzonzi, Etherington (Owen, 85), Adam (Jerome, 63), Crouch (Jones, 63)

“jontaronta, what is commonly known to cure all ills when it comes to football ? Winning! plain and simple. but winning just seems almost foreign to Tony Pulis, as strange as that seems to say. Actions speak louder than words and the performances just defy completely what he says about him trying to win every game.
It is just not good enough after 5 seasons and 90 million quid.”

“The next few games will be the defining moments for a lot of Stoke fans. We beat the not so fashionable sides, which is not beyond the realms of possibility and all is rosy. However, for me it will not change my view point on the current managerial situation. Some would say my fixation to remove TP is based on a deluded fantasy of slick attractive football. To that i would say "yes it is" and why not! Surely, it is not beyond the teams capability to pass the ball and open up defenses? What does £50,000,000 represent in quality of player. In my world it should give the team more options than hoofing the ball from defense to the forward line.

It was not so long ago we had the "delap" throw and it was effective for a period of time. Now, in the eyes of TP we have progressed beacuse we have stopped this tactic. Amazing!!

Without patronising anyone in this forum but does it not concern anyone that every week we are the last game on Match of the Day? This tells me the true progress of the team. It may seem trivial to some but it is significant.

Mr Puilis is becoming a characature of himself. Standing on the touchline allowing away supporters to ridicule him. This is damaging the clubs reputation.

    Is it time for change?”

“That was a one sided game, but lets be fair my team will tear alot of teams apart this season playing like that, a delight to watch for me. TP got it wrong, the only way you will beat us is by pressing high up the pitch, man to man tight marking, using your strength physically, using set pieces. Stoke failed to do any of the stuff that make them so strong and the result was free flowing football from us and thats all the invitation we need. I see why he started Crouch but failed to get the right ball and support to him. Thats said not many teams would be able to deal with our full backs on days like this, both popping up in striker positions, must be impossible to defend, a joy to watch though.”

“And what exactly are YOU doing? Writing diatribes to the Sentinel's webpage which is never read by anyone of us handful constitutes as exactly nothing, it does no good whatsoever. Certainly doesn't help the team, just breathes bad feeling.”

“I always have to laugh at the types who can't saying anything intelligent about the subject matter so they resort to personal attacks on other posters. Who is this nooneshome fella anyway ?
People, wanting and demanding better for your team is not a bad thing . Being a supporter is not sitting in the cold, the heat, the dry or the wet watching your team and never having a bad thing to say about them and choosing to ignore the obvious Some people are in denial about Tony Pulis because can only do one thing and one thing very well and that is keep his team from getting relegated.Asking him to do more is totally out of his realm. Take away our fine 3-1 win over Liverpool, please tell me what else have we done well or different this season than any other, especially last ? It's almost like a replay of last season and I'm sorry for those with thin skin who choose to ignore the obvious but I am sick and tired of seeing this dross week in and week out while our manager smirks his way through another press conference blaming his players. If some of you haven't noticed we have a good squad, but a squad that is completely being misused, underused, and at times not even used at all with the likes of Palacios, Jerome, Owen, Ness, Upson, Edu etc. Why do people see fit to just bash other supporters because they state the obvious while the manager can't see the obvious if it fell on his head!
It is time for Pulis to wake up and figure out that he is not doing a very good job, he is doing the exact same as he has done in the past 4 seasons and after all the money, all the new players etc just isn't good enough !
I have to ask, if you someone doing a poor job where you work and he just keeps blaming the other people or his tools, would you not expect someone to step in and say something ?
This is how I support the Potters, when we do well I sing and cheer louder than anyone, when we don't and lets face it, that has been a lot over the last couple of seasons and I'm getting tired of it,I complain just as loud !”

“Surely, after conceding 13 goals in the league in 4 games, even Pulis must be wondering if he has taken Stoke as far as he can. I hear there's an up-and-coming, forward-thinking (in more ways than one) young manager called Nigel Adkins available-how about moving Pulis upstairs?”
