TWO violent thugs who attacked David Sutton and left him with life changing injuries are now serving 32 month jail sentences.

Mr Sutton is reported as saying that he is happy with the long sentences they have received.

I am sorry to criticise you Mr Sutton, but the truth is they have been let off with no more than a slap on the wrist.

It would appear that like so many of the general public you are unaware what a 32-month sentence amounts to.

First of all they will only have to serve half of the sentence, which immediately brings it down to 16 months.

Then, no doubt, they will tell the parole board what they want to hear be granted parole.

Often a prisoner will be released after a mere six months if he agrees to be electronically tagged.

Thirty-two months doesn't sound too long after all when you consider these points.

Throw in a couple of weekend home visits and day releases, and they may be seen walking the streets in just a few months.

The criteria for sentencing is no more than a scam set up by the government to keep prison numbers down while creating the illusion of being tough on crime.

Justice minister Ken Clarke makes no secret of the fact that he believes only murderers and terrorists should be in jail.

That is why these sentencing outrages occur on a daily basis. The statue of Lady Justice above the Old Bailey holding sword and scales should take her blindfold off and put a clothes peg over her nose instead.
