Stoke star cleared of city centre assault
STOKE City full-back Ryan Shotton has been cleared of assaulting a man in Hanley city centre.
The Fenton-born defender, a product of the club's youth academy, was accused of assaulting Mark McDonald in Pall Mall, Hanley, in the early hours of June 24.
Mr Shotton, aged 24, of Brunswick Court, Newcastle, admitted punching Mr McDonald but denied assault, saying he acted in self defence.
North Staffordshire magistrates today (Monday) acquitted Mr Shotton of the charge, finding he acted in self defence of his friend.

“Obviously he clamours for 'recognition and affection' that goes with it. Insecurity, pure and simple.
It goes with the terrain -these lads who go straight from school in these so called academies -under the watchful wing of the club management -often finish up bewildered in their 20s where 'getting along with the ordinary man in the street is concerned'.
They lead separate lives -but crave the ordinary one -to go with the money they have to spend... Guidance is required here. Pronto. 'tough on the pitch -tough on the street' -No good.”
