NUMBER JUNKIE: A student who became hooked on maths while studying A-levels in Stoke-on-Trent has been named one of Britain's top three young mathematicians

.

Stephanie Belcher, from Baddeley Green, will find out tomorrow if she has won the Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Student of the Year award for maths.

The 22-year-old, pictured, developed her passion for the subject while studying at Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College several years ago. She has now returned to meet her former teachers.

Stephanie said: "I was good at maths when I was at school, but it wasn't until I hit A-levels that I became passionate about the subject. My teachers at college were like friends and they were really good at helping us understand things."

Stephanie took A-levels in maths and further maths, gaining A grades, then went on to get a first-class maths degree from Durham University. She is now living in Germany, where she is doing a PhD in algebraic geometry.

The SET awards are Britain's most important awards for science and engineering students. The maths category is judged by the Institute of Mathematics and the London Mathematical Society.
