Is Stoke-on-Trent City Council in a spin?
A LEAKED letter today reveals an apparent communication breakdown at the top of Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
In an astonishing written complaint, furious Elected Mayor Mark Meredith has accused the council's £75,000-a-year communications chief of 'sabotaging' his efforts to run the city.
The mayor sent the formal complaint to council manager Steve Robinson calling for a "swift resolution" to the issue in mid-June.
But Mr Robinson – who leaves for a new job next month – today gave Dan Barton and his team his full backing.
The Sentinel has seen the letter, together with an accompanying evidence log listing 27 occasions when Mr Barton or his department are alleged to have fallen below Mr Meredith's expectations. In one extract it reveals Mr Meredith claims he did not know two city primary schools were facing closure when he attended a briefing with a Sentinel reporter.
The unsigned letter also bore the names of Labour group leader Councillor Joy Garner, Conservative and Independent Alliance leader Councillor Roger Ibbs and Lib Dem group leader Councillor Jean Bowers, who heads the council's power-sharing coalition. They today distanced themselves from the row. The letter states: "The group leaders, but particularly the elected mayor, cannot tolerate a situation where there is a complete breakdown of trust between himself and the head of communications."
It adds: "We are fully aware of the potential consequences of making this complaint and have not made it lightly.
"We trust that you will bring a swift resolution to this serious problem."
Mr Barton, who was head of news at Carlton TV in Birmingham before taking up the council post earlier this year, has declined to comment on the accusations in the letter.
Asked about the letter Mr Meredith said:"It was a private and confidential piece of correspondence to the chief executive and it is his responsibility to deal with the issues raised internally and with proper and due process."
Mr Meredith added that he still has concerns about the running of the communications department today.
But that contrasted with the three group leaders who said they no longer share Mr Meredith's reservations.
Ms Garner and Ms Bowers said they were not aware their names appeared on the letter, and all three said they fully support Mr Barton and his press office staff.
Ms Garner said: "I have no problems with him at all and I didn't even know my name was on the letter."
Mr Robinson has also spoken out to express his support for Mr Barton over the elected mayor's complaint.
He said: "We do not comment on internal staffing matters, but I can confirm that Dan Barton and his team have my full backing and support."

“Rog, it is not stirring, it is letting the good people of Stoke on Trent know, exactly how these people decide major decisions. You had to be there, to believe it. If that is how some of them behave, heaven help us for the future.”

“Socialism is an wreckful ideology always has been and always will be. as for the Mayors office it's nothing but a glorified political platform riddled with functional ideological and personal divisions therefore is it any wonder that the vast majority of the people in Stoke-on-Trent no longer esteem the Mayor's office and the same should be said for the local Labour Party actualy the same could be said also for the National Labour Party.”

“It hurts me that we find ourselves in this situation in this city. A Labour mayor not following party policies, Labour councilors not coming out and distancing themselves from the actions of this paranoid maverick mayor and a totally inept Labour Group Leader who at the EMB meeting just tutted, rolled her eyes, seconed every proposal faster than Linford Christie out of the starting Blocks! (maybe she wanted to get home to watch Corri!) I was disgusted to witness these actions from so called politicians from the "party of the people" It's made me realise that these people don't deserve my vote locally allthough our MP are different class thank god! Maybe Mr Meredith's legacy will be, through the debacle that is his leadership, the handing of the running of this city to a far right party. Shame on him!”

“As Nicky and Julie state, it was the total lack of interest, in what was a major decision, on this school, that insulted the parents that attended. I thought certain members of the EMB were very rude, as you say talking amongst themselves, raising eyes, and trying to get the Chair to hurry along. That just shows how much they are interested, and clearly to certain members, Every Child Doesnt Matter. The decision on the school was inevitable, and is something that we have to sadly accept. Any major questions involving the pupils education remaining on site etc etc, was not answered, as Councillors were told they had to move on. Very disappointing is all I can say. Totally disillusioned with the running of Council, and the worrying thing is it is not going to get any better.”

“Did I read it correctly, Steve Robinson as go a backbone and stood for what he believes in instead of what the Elected mayor says. Shame its just 12 months to late. Mark reminds me of another dictator who will remain nameless (a short guy with a dodgy Mustache.”

“Anita - I was at the EMB and I can re-iterate you that what you have read about the Board's conduct and dismissiveness of the concerns raised by other councillors is absolutely right. The Board was completely defensive, with members speaking among themselves while important points were being brought up. Joy Gardner sat slumped in her seat, looking bored (as did most of them) speaking and acting like Ibbs' puppet. I found the whole thing sickening. Roger Ibbs sneered at everyone and, while knowing there were representatives there from the Save Trentham High Action Group, deliberately refused any discussion or comment about the 3rd agenda item - the Scrutinity Committe's recommendation to allow the soft federation of Trentham High/St Joseph's and taking the school off the closure list. He announced they had not had enough time to discuss it (over a month??!)and was immediately seconded by Cllr Gardner, over a done in less than a minute. Longton High's closure may well have been a foregone conclusion but they could have at least made an effort to pretend they could give a damn!”
