Stoke City: We've got a mountain to climb to beat Valencia, says Pulis

TONY Pulis returned from his spying mission in Valencia admitting: "We've got one hell of a game on our hands this week."

Pulis saw Valencia limber up for Thursday's Europa League clash at the Britannia by hammering Sporting Gijon 4-0 at the weekend.

That consolidates their third spot in La Liga and even gives them an outside chance of catching a stuttering Barcelona.

"I can tell you that our supporters will see some top, top players when Valencia come to town," said the Stoke boss.

"We've had some great results in Europe this season, particularly at our place, but this opposition is a step up from what we've faced so far.

"They've got players from Brazil, Italy and Argentina. They are technically very good, well drilled, powerful and prepared to work hard as well.

"They are a Champions League team, really, and the third-best team in Spain, but are not too far behind Barcelona and Real Madrid."

Pulis was especially keen to see Valencia play at home to get a feel of the conditions and atmosphere awaiting Stoke in the second leg at the Mestalla next week.

"The ground was fantastic and the crowd was brilliant, about 42,000 in there I think," he added.

"These two ties will be tough, but we are all looking forward to this challenge.

"It's the first time our club has gone this far and I know our fans will be up for it.

"It's a big mountain we have to climb, but given our ground and our supporters, we still believe we've got a good chance against a great team."

Pulis is likely to recall Asmir Begovic in goal – in place of Thomas Sorensen – and has said that midfielder Rory Delap is a probable starter after being rested from Saturday's trip to Fulham.

Pulis will also be sorely tempted to lean on Peter Crouch's renowned continental experience for the biggest European night in the club's history.

He goes into the tie with the impressive statistics of 24 goals in 47 European appearances for Aston Villa, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Tottenham and Stoke.

Those figures include goals at home to Besiktas and away to Maccabi Tel Aviv already this season by way of a boost as he seeks to end a run of six games since last scoring for Stoke.

The clubs says there are still tickets remaining for Thursday's tie, while Stoke's 2,300 allocation for the second leg in Valencia is heading towards a sell-out.

STOKE are in Staffs Senior Cup quarter-final action tonight when they travel to non-league Hednesford Town (7.30pm).

“Ditto Grass, but it's not what I think it's what I know. You are a grass, a coward and an inadequate who needs to have his ego massaged by himself and his self congratulating cronies. What is the "likes of me" ? Let me enlighten you, I'm a decent law abiding bloke who loves his football but you don't like me because I'm cleverer than you and I can see through your rubbish, your ridiculous attempts at humour and your real motives for using this site. No one on here outside of your little circle has the slightest interest in you or anything you write but you won't go away because you love yourself to much. You and your mates are just a vermin that infest this site. You use sites like this because the reality is no one in the real world is ever going to listen to a jerk like you face to face without walking away. Check out the comments when your buddy Kev writes one of his piles of drivel, no one apart from your lot has a good word for it. Like you it's boring. Of course if you don't care what I think then you won't reply to this and you will never mention me or respond to my comments again, but we both know you will. If you really want to bore me write one of your worthless Auntie Shottie pieces. Bye for now.”

“Don't even have the bottle to own up then Matty. I posted and ended telling you to P. Off. You posted threatening to report me. I posted again and told you to P. Off and report away if you want to. I get an e-mail from the Sentinel with copies of my posts saying I have been reported and so my account is suspended for 7 days. Like I say no one likes a Grass and that's what you are. And as for me and my foul mouth, rarely do I actually swear and when I do it's to numptys like you who frankly deserve it. If the swearing offends you I suppose it's a good thing you never go to Stoke cus there's a lot of it that goes on. Why not find another site and bore some other people cus this one is for Stoke fans and you don't qualify.”

“The EL contigent was changed after the transfer window and Pulis has submitted Woody's name, so he is available after all, Mel.

Wouldn't expect him to play anyway, he's too slow for the Valencia wide men, and Pulis does know now that Huth/Ryan is the best defensive pair.”

“Johnson if you mean report you for your foul tongue; no I did not but if your language was offensive enough I might. Can you tell us what the word you apparently said rhymes with? I have never heard of the Sentinel suspending somebody then letting them back on. They usually disable the account. Something is not adding up”

“Hello Grassyformore, I'm back after my suspension after you grassed me up to the Sentinel for saying a rude word. I see nothing has changed and you are still talking rubbish. Best be careful what I say in case you report me again Grassy. See you at the game tonight, I'll be able to recognise you cus you will be the one reporting 27,000 people to the Stewards for swearing.”

“Psst Potterspeil I am behind enemy lines under cover pass this on to TP. The intelligence is that Valencia don't want it as much as us. They know they can play some nice stuff but they know we are rough and ready for em. Can you meet me in the visitors enclosure for debriefing? I can stay longer because Social are giving me one of those crisis loans; they say I can have as much dole as I like being as I am Matt the braver. What will you be wearing over your 50" torso?”

“I wish Pulis would go for an attacking 4-4-2 formation against Valencia like you're all suggesting, but it could be suicidal against a side like Valencia who relies on pace, and unusually for a Spanish team, direct play.

So I'm fairly confident he will play some variation of 4-5-1/4-3-3 which means that he will continue with the one winger only policy. If Etherington is fit enough, he will get the nod. Apart from him I guess both Shottton and Delap will be picked, as Pulis will belive that Valencia, unlike the 19 teams in the PL, will struggle against any throws we might get.

No doubt Valencia will have trained to defend themselves against this tactical ploy. But I believe that if you never actually have faced a delaping in your life, there's just no way you can prepare yourselves on the spot - which is exactly what happened when Arsenal, Chelsea, and most other sides reacted in the beginning. They were desperate but failed once or twice per game.

Once you have tried defending yourself against it a few times you will come up with the right answers, which we've seen this season especially and also to some degree last season.

I'll not try to secondguess who'se gonna play because I know Pulis will follow his own mind and he should, at least to some extent. I'm not at all comfortable with his current tactics and team selections, but I'll be rooting for them as much as I can from my corner of the world.”
